Today I took Cecil and Red to Carters Steam Fair in Bath. They are there until this Sunday and then at other grounds on into the autumn. I think they are an absolute essential thing to see.
It is a vintage steam fair and is owned and run by the Carter family. All the rides are hand painted and sign written by Joby Carter who is the son of Anna Carter. The steam powered swing boats date from 1921 and are outstandingly beautiful and give you a glimpse of what a Victorian showground would have looked like.
We stayed until late afternoon with the sound of New Orleans blues, as daylight turned to the light of a thousand light bulbs - great music, beautiful painted horses, some thrilling rides that whizz you about in the air at high speeds, a funny ghost train.
It is brilliant and a perfect way to spend a summer holiday afternoon. GO!
