Nell Gifford has a degree in English Literature from New College, Oxford. Through her brother-in-law, Gerald Balding, she began her career at Circus Flora in the USA and has since worked on Santus Circus, Chinese State Circus, Bobby Roberts Super Circus and Circus Roncalli in Germany under Yasmine Smart. Nell has written a book about her life in the circus called Josser, the secret life of a circus girl (Little, Brown) and a children’s biography on the inventor of the circus, Philip Astley (The Short Book Company). Since 2000 she has been the executive producer on all seven Giffords Circus Shows.

In 2007 Nell was awarded an Honorary Fellowship to the University of Gloucestershire.
